The Woolly Mammoth is a larger than life-size, three-ton iron sculpture created
by artist Dixie Jewett of Dayton, Oregon.
Woolly is on loan at Fossil for a few years while area residents
raise funds for its permanent placement. Jewett, a former Alaska bush pilot, is
agreed to loan Woolly to local residents after learning that Fossil reportedly
is named for mammoth bones found nearby. The sculpture has been placed along
Main St. and serves as an icon for the region's geologic and paleontologic
resources. The asking price is $55,000. As of Oct. 2006 nearly $13,000 has been
raised. A foundation grant has been offered to match every $1
contribution one-to-one during 2006 and 2007.
